Book Description

When big-city life threatens the safety of one of their children, Brad and Darlene Henderson move with their three teenagers from Houston to the tiny town of Round Top, Texas.
Adjusting to small-town life is difficult for the kids, especially fifteen-year-old Grace who is coping in a dangerous way.
Married life hasn’t always been bliss, but their strong faith has carried Brad and Darlene through the difficult times. When Darlene takes a job outside the home for the first time in their marriage, the domestic tension rises.
While working with special needs children at her new job, the widowed father of one of the students starts paying more attention to Darlene than is appropriate. Problem is, she feels like someone is listening to her for the first time in a long time.
If Darlene ever needed God . . . it’s now.
Experience a family’s triumph over lies, betrayal, and loss while still clinging to the One who matters most.

My Review:

This book is different from the other books I have read from this author. It's about a family who seems to have the ideal life but when real world experiences challenges this family we see if their faith in God is real or fake. After making some unwise decisions each family member has to see where their faith really lies.

I would recommend this book to my friends and I would give it 4 stars.

Even though God could take care of everything Himself and doesn’t really need our help, He desperately WANTS us to help Him care for others. Gutwein walks young people through discovering and embracing their unique God-given strengths and abilities, then figuring out how to help others. Sometimes doing that takes a leap of faith on our part, and often becoming fearless in the process. More about Austin: At eighteen years old, Gutwein speaks with wisdom and has the experience to reinforce his message. When Austin was just nine years old, he watched a video that showed children in Africa who had lost their parents to AIDS. Gutwein realized these kids weren’t any different from him—except they were suffering. Feeling called to help, he took his love of basketball and decided to shoot free throws to raise money for orphans in Zambia. On World AIDS Day in 2004, he shot 2,057 free throws to represent the 2,057 kids who would be orphaned during his day at school. Through sponsorship from parents and friends, Gutwein raised over $3,000 that day to give hope to eight orphans in Zambia. Over the past eight years, Gutwein’s efforts have created Hoops of Hope, the largest free throw marathon in the world. With an estimated 40,000 people in more than 25 countries participating, Hoops of Hope has raised more than $2.5 million to build schools, medical clinics, dormitories for orphanages, and the only computer lab in Zambia. Mind Monsters: Conquering fear, worry, guilt and other negative thoughts that work against you [Paperback]

Kevin Gerald (Author)

Every day we are bombarded with negative messages—from society, the media, and even from self-talk in our own minds. Take a minute to think about these questions:
  • Do you lack peace because of your perspective?
  • Do you focus on the problems around you?
  • Do you have trouble recognizing the good things in your life?
  • Do you feel despair or depression, despite your blessings?
Answering yes to questions like these is evidence of mind monsters. Mind monsters are those negative thoughts we all battle, the creeping shadows in the corners of our minds that feed our insecurities, worries, and fears. They will steal your life…if you let them. But there is good news! You can take control. In Mind Monsters Kevin Gerald shows you how to recognize destructive thoughts, take them captive, and use biblical truths to overcome them.
Today you have a choice: Will you allow your mind monsters to take up residence, affecting who you are and God’s plan for your life, or will you conquer them and experience a life that is positive, abundant, joyful, and overflowing with peace?

Author Bio

Riva Tims is the pastor of Majestic Life Ministries, a nondenominational congregation in Orlando, Florida. She has been in ministry for more than fifteen years as a pastor and speaker and is the co-host of her own TV and radio programs.

My Review:
This is a much needed book written about what goes on in the lives and families of ministers that get off track. Christian often idolize their ministers which is why there is no accountability when a ministry goes awry. Riva Tims story is told in a way that shares bible truths of what do I do when my world falls apart. She shares how other Christians told her to just accept the sin and cover it up. I could just feel the pain and confusion she must of felt through this whole process. I am amazed that she can share her story with a hopeful , "you can survive", attitude. This attitude is supported with scripture. She shares through the Word of God how he lead her through the valley and is still there to be her support and guide. While I am sure there is more to this story I would encourage all in ministry and their families to read this book. Look for the danger signals and humble yourself before the Lord. It was encouraging to see at the end of the book that she plans on starting a program for ministers that fall and need to be restored while being held accountable.

Constantly Craving

By Marilyn Meberg
Published by Thomas Nelson

Book Description

Our cravings are written into our DNA. They’re influenced by our childhood experiences. They’re driving the choices we make as adults. And often, they’re keeping us hungry. Never satisfied. Ever searching.
What do they mean? What are we to do with them? Should we feel guilty? Are there solutions?
Counselor and author Marilyn Meberg knows all about cravings. She also knows the One who knit us together, desires and all. With wit and compassion, Marilyn helps us understand our appetites, offers advice for managing them here on earth, and encourages us to eagerly await the day when we will find total satisfaction in heaven.
In the meantime, Constantly Craving is an excellent reminder that our desires for more can lead us to the One we really need, the only One who will quench our thirst forever. Really? Really!

My Review:
Constantly Craving was an interesting book about how we use are cravings for fill up a void in some area of our lives. The author; Marilyn Meberg, shares is a witty, humorous way that allows us to look into areas of our lives that are lacking the spiritual growth without feeling condemnation. While we look to earthly things to fill up voids in our lives or use other people to try in satisfy our cravings we know that it is only through Christ alone these cravings can be truly satisfied. We are instructed to be as Paul who stated, "I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.(Phil. 4:11)" This is an encouraging book that I would recommend to all my friends.

Book Description
In the aftermath of a massive Los Angeles earthquake, the perfect existence Teal Morgan-Adams has built begins to crumble. Teal’s daughter, Maiya, is determined to learn the identity of her biological father, despite the loving devotion of her stepdad, River Adams. But that’s a secret Teal hoped would remain buried forever. She has never shared the truth with anyone . . . not her family, not River, not even Maiya’s father.

As Maiya’s rebellion escalates, Teal receives tragic news from her sister and decides to take Maiya home to Cedar Pointe, Oregon, a place she’s avoided most of her adult life. But will her already-strained marriage survive the distance and the secrets she’ll be forced to face there? And can Teal erase the lies that echo in her heart?

My Review:
This is not the first book of Sally John I have read and was not disappointed by this book. The story gets your attention immediately with the description of the earthquake. As the story goes on it deals with secrets, relationships and God's grace. This would be a great book to share with a friend who has yet to experience the peace which only comes through God. I enjoyed the characters and the plot.I would encourage my friends to read this book.

Not This Time

A Novel

Written by Vicki Hinze

About This Book

Small town scandal. International terrorist attack. Who among them is the traitor?
Sara and Beth have built a multi-million dollar business together, but their once solid friendship is now strained. Beth is leery of Sara’s husband, and when he is kidnapped, authorities consider Beth their prime suspect.

Then, their small town of Seagrove Village is rocked by an act of terrorism, and Beth doesn’t know who to trust. Someone she knows is linked to the attack, but who? Is there a connection to Crossroads Crisis Center? In the midst of the confusion and fear, Beth finds herself attracted to a man from her past. She knows she shouldn’t fall in love with him, but she can’t resist or even explain their bond. As her world unravels around her, she wonders, is it possible to be beyond redemption?

My Review:
This is not the type of book I would usually pick to read but it looked interesting. I didn't know it was the 3rd book in a series which made it hard at times to understand what was going on and why but the author does her best to inform the reader. The book had suspense, romance and God's redemption all mixed together. If you like suspense books with a biblical theme entwined this book is for you.

Spirit Wars: Winning the Invisible Battle Against Sin and the Enemy

You know the battle is raging--but are you fighting the right enemy?
Just as enemies fought Joshua in the Promised Land, and Nehemiah faced opposition as he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, our enemy will fight us as we approach the spiritual terrain God has promised us. Most Christians retreat at the first sign of conflict because they fail to recognize the true nature of the battle. But you can prevail in freedom and joy.
Sharing his deeply personal story of demonic bondage, torment and ultimate deliverance, pastor and bestselling author Kris Vallotton turns the idea of spiritual warfare as we know it on its head. He reveals the diabolical lies and strategies of the enemy--attacks and traps so subtle and deceptive that we may find our souls and hearts imprisoned without even knowing it.
No more! Now you can win the invisible battle against sin and the enemy. Victory is within your grasp. Will you take hold?

My Review:
I thought this would be just more of the same as far as books on the topic of spiritual warfare but I found the book to be more in depth than a lot of other books on the subject. The author share from his real experiences in dealing with deliverance of both himself and other people. Some of the topics discussed in the book  generational curses, casting out demons and the armor of God. This book deals with the real life issue of spiritual warfare without being way out there. The book is sound, biblical and uplifting. I would recommend this book to all my friends.

CSS VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR | SPECIAL DELIVERY | KATHI MACIAS

Special Delivery is book two in the Freedom (human trafficking) series. For anyone who may not have read book one, Deliver Me From Evil, can you fill us in on the focus of the series in general, and Special Delivery in particular?

The Freedom series is a three-book fiction series built around the horrifying topic of human trafficking. People often ask me why I decided to write about such a dark topic. First, I explain that I’m not writing about a dark topic; I’m writing about the Light that shines in that darkness. And second, I believe the Church should be at the forefront of the modern-day abolition movement to set the captives (modern-day slaves) free. The three books in this series specifically follows the life of a young woman named Mara, who was sold into sexual slavery by her own parents in Mexico, and then smuggled across the border into San Diego by her uncle who then served as her pimp. A strong sub-plot throughout the series tells of two sisters in the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Chanthra and Lawan, who are also trapped in a brothel. Finally, a teenage girl named Francesca, kidnapped in Juarez, Mexico, and forced into prostitution, is introduced in book two. Special Delivery picks up two years after book one, Deliver Me From Evil, ends, and continues with the stories of Mara and Lawan, as well as others carried over from book one. Mara hopes she is finally free to pursue her own life because she was rescued from the brothel and her testimony helped lock up her uncle for life. But the man has underground connections and is driven by revenge to reach out from behind bars and deliver the ultimate punishment to his niece.

This isn’t the first fiction series you’ve written on nationwide and even worldwide social issues, the one previous to this being the persecuted Church. What draws you to these difficult topics?

As a Christian, I believe I am compelled to use my God-given gifts to honor God in all I do—and that includes exposing the deeds of darkness, calling sinners to repentance, and taking a stand for righteousness by doing all I can to help rescue those who are suffering. I dare not turn my back on “the least of these.” I also believe that God placed this sort of burden on my heart even before I became a Christian at the age of 26. I’ve always been a champion of the underdog, a “soap-box” preacher, if you will. When I met Jesus, I simply redirected that passion toward His people, realizing I couldn’t effect real change in my own strength anyway.

With your obvious passion to right social and moral wrongs through the power of the Gospel, how did writing and speaking enter into that?

I’ve known I wanted to be a writer since I was a child—never wanted to do anything else. When I was a teenager I told my then boyfriend (now husband) that I was going to be a writer one day. What a blessing that God allowed me to fulfill that dream! After becoming a believer and growing in my faith, it was natural to take my passion to fight for others and incorporate it into my writing. Speaking, on the other hand, was an entirely different story. I was terrified of public speaking when I was young, and the day I received Christ I made a “bargain” with God, promising to do anything He asked of me—so long as it didn’t include public speaking. (Does God have a sense of humor or what???) Now, when I stand in front of audiences where I believe God has called me to speak (and actually find myself enjoying it!), I tell my listeners that if God has called them to do something and they feel it’s impossible, they can consider me their “visual aid” that NOTHING is impossible with God IF we will simply take that first step of obedience and let Him fulfill His purpose in and through us.
With the topics of the worldwide persecuted Church and human trafficking under your belt, what other issues are you dealing with in your writing?

My Christmas 2011 book, A Christmas Journey Home, dealt with the immigration/border problem, and my Christmas 2012 novel, Unexpected Christmas Hero, will be about homelessness in America. The next issues-related fiction series I have on tap—which I am just starting to write, by the way—is called the “Patches of Courage” series and will begin releasing in late January 2013. Book one is The Moses Quilt, based on the life of Harriet Tubman, and will be followed by The Christmas Quilt and The Impossible Quilt. This series of books will highlight historical American women whose Christian faith enabled them to walk in great courage and make a difference in the lives of countless people.

My Review:
The author takes us on a journey of the horrors of human trafficking. She doesn't hold back with the realities involved with this storyline but in the end show us that there is hope through God.
This is the second book in the Freedom series. Even though this is a book of fiction the author, Kathi Macias, does an excellent job educating us on such a serious topic all the while holding are attention with a interesting storyline. While it may be difficult to read at times I would encourage others to read this book.

My Review:
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought it was going to be like all the other books about how to budget your money. Instead it was that and more. The tips on budgeting are more realistic than other books I have read in the past. These tips are doable  for the average family. The author, Crystal Paine suggest setting big goals and then breaking down those goals into little steps that can help you complete the big goal. She discusses getting  organized in your home, budget and all areas of your life such as your time. Each chapter addresses different areas to help us live within are means. I especially like the chapters where she shares where and how you can purchase things such as eyeglasses, weight management and clothing cheaper. This is a book you want to listen to more than once. That is the great thing about this book being on audio. You can listen to it while your doing another task. I could go on and on about this book. I highly recommend this book as a great resource for everyone!

Captive Heart, The

Dale Cramer is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed novel Levi's Will, based on the story of Dale's father, a runaway Amishman. Dale's latest series, THE DAUGHTERS OF CALEB BENDER, is based on an Amish colony in the mountains of Mexico where three generations of his family lived in the 1920s. He currently lives in Georgia with his wife of 36 years, two sons and a Bernese Mountain Dog named Rupert. Visit him on his Web site at www.dalecramer.com

The Epic Story of an Amish Community in Peril
Ravaged by disease, preyed upon by ruthless bandits, the Bender family's second year in Mexico has taken a grievous turn. Faced with impossible choices, the expatriate Amish discover, more than ever before, what it means to live by faith and not by sight
But it's Miriam who must make the hardest choice as her heart takes her on a new and dangerous course. Domingo. "He is gentle," his sister said, "until someone he loves is threatened." Is Miriam that someone?
"Cualnezqui," he often calls her--the Nahuatl word for Beautiful one. The chiseled native has proven himself a man of principle, grace and power, yet is he the pearl of great price for whom Miriam would sacrifice everything, or is he merely a friend? Tormented by conflicting emotions, she's haunted by vivid dreams: Dressed in the coarse cotton pants and shirt of a peasant, she stands on the precipice of a sun-washed ridge searching desperately for Domingo. Domingo the fierce. Domingo the protector.
Domingo the forbidden.

Inspired by Actual Events!

My Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is the second book of the author's The Daughters of Caleb Bender series. These books are inspired by actual events of a small Amish group that settled in Paradise Valley in Mexico. This book keeps you interested from the beginning.  The contents of this story make me wonder why this group of Amish would live in such a dangerous place. They moved there back in the early 1900's to avoid religious persecution and so that their children would not be schooled by the Englisher.  As the book describes it was a beautiful location that was ripe for farming but much danger surrounded them. The Captive Heart contains mystery, romance and heartache with religion as its cornerstone. If you enjoy reading Amish fiction this is a book for you!

A Romance from the Heart of Amish Country

Written by Cindy Woodsmall

Waterbrook Multnomah Publishing Group

About This Book

Annie Martin loves the Plain ways of her Old Order Mennonite people, like those revered by her beloved grandfather. Retreating from a contentious relationship with her mother, Annie goes to live with her Daadi Moses in Apple Ridge.

But as spring moves into Pennsylvania and Annie spends time amongst the cherry trees with the handsome Aden Zook, she wishes she could forget how deeply the lines between the Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite are drawn.

Can Annie and Aden find a place for their love to bloom in the midst of the brewing storm?

My Review:
Nice pleasant read. This book gives some insight about the difference between the Old Order Mennonite (which I knew nothing about) and Old Order Amish. Of course this is a love story where both parties risk the shunning of their own group which  will cause problems for not only themselves  but possibly their families. The book also touches on disabilities, family relationships and trusting God even when you don't know why bad things happen. If you like to read Amish stories I would recommend this book for you.

(Guideposts)
ISBN:978-0824945046

About the Book:
"Be still and know that I am God.” is one of the most beautiful verses from the Bible, but it’s not easy to practice in this busy world. Mornings with Jesus will help you do just that—“be still” in Jesus’ beautiful and powerful presence. For those who are seeking a deeper experience in their relationship with Christ, Mornings with Jesus offers a fresh perspective of who Jesus is (the Healer, the Son of God, the Comforter, the Good Shepherd) and what that means for day-to-day life. With a warm and friendly voice, 365 short devotional writings on the character and teachings of Jesus encourage readers to greet each day by drawing near to Him and inviting His presence into their day. Spend time with Jesus at the beginning of each day and experience His nearness and peace in a new way throughout the year. Each day’s selection includes: • a Bible verse • an entry based on Jesus: His words, miracles, and parables; His wisdom, compassion, and comfort; His mystery, power, divinity, and humanity • a “faith step” that will inspire and challenge readers to apply the day’s message to their lives.

My Review:
This is a nice yearly devotional that can help you find encouragement as you start your day. Each contributor shares from their own perspective of where they are in relationship with Christ. Some you will related to better than others but be open to learn something from each of them. At the end of each days reading is what they call a Faith Step. For example on July 3, contributor Judy Baer writes, "Today take your friend Jesus with you wherever you go. think of Him as physically at your side in the coffee shop, at the library, at a meeting or anywhere you go." Another nice thing about this devotional is it includes a topical index at the back of the book. I would recommend this book for when you are in a rush and need that quick encouragement during your day!

Promise of Provision, The: Living and Giving from God's Abundant Supply

[Paperback]

Derek Prince
(Author)
Published by Chosen a division of Baker Publishing Group

Book Description

October 1, 2011
In an age in which so many have so much, and most want more, what does the word abundance really mean? What does God have to say about it? And how can Chrisitians find and walk in it?

Respected author and teacher Derek Prince, with his trademark methodical approach, brings his wisdom and insight to the topic of God's abundance. He explains what abundance consists of and how believers can break the curse of poverty and step into a life of freedom. Prince also lays out the biblical conditions necessary to receiving this supernatural provision, giving Christians a practical guide to walking in God's generous abundance and Kingdom blessings.
My Review:
This is not a book about God give me, give me but more about the true biblical prospective of abundance with God supplying our needs. To be honest I thought this would be another book about how God desires all ministers to be rich and to be given everything they want. We see too much of this in the church and it has become the down fall for many. After all, it is the love of money that is the root to all evil.
  1. 1 Timothy 6:10 (NLT)
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
There is really nothing new in this book and it's not a book for everybody. Some will find it helpful to gain some perspective on how God provides for his people, while others may not agree with all its teaching or feel that things are taken out of context. For those that think God just wants us all poor to be a good christian I would recommend they check this book out. Get your bible out at the same time and check out the scriptures for yourself.
Not a book for everyone.

 THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE
 TO
HEALING

Equipping All Christians to Pray for the Sick

BILL JOHNSON
RANDY CLARK
PUBLISHED BY CHOSEN
A Division of Baker Publishing Group

Book Description

October 1, 2011
The Bible is full of accounts of miraculous healing. And God is moving as amazingly today as he was back then. Thousands are being healed all over the world--and his children are part of it.

For the first time, premier renewal leaders Bill Johnson and Randy Clark team up to equip Christians to minister healing. Grounded from start to finish in Scripture, Johnson and Clark lay out the rich theological and historical foundation for healing in the church today. Full of inspiring stories, this book offers practical, proven, step-by-step guidance to ministering healing, including how to
• understand the authority of the believer in healing
• create an atmosphere of faith
• receive words of knowledge
• implement the five-step model of healing prayer

The ministry of healing is not reserved for a select few. God's miraculous healing is part of the Good News--and every believer can become a conduit for his healing power.

My Review:
This is a great resource book to keep on hand. It encourages us to seek more of God. Its teaching is sound and biblical on the subject of healing. This is a great book for not only those in ministry but for every christian who wishes to fulfill God's command to all believers in Mark 16: 15-18 (NIV)
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

There are three parts to this book. The first part is the authors sharing their personal journey in regards to healing.
The second part deals with what the bible says about healing and the theological foundation of these biblical truths of healing.
The third part of the book deals with the actual practice of healing. It deals with the different ways God works through us to pray for the healing of others.
This book provides good practical advise that comes from sound scriptures.
I would recommend this book to every christian.

What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, Jesus said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily. But who do you know who lives like that? Do you?

My Review:
This is a book we all need. It ask the important questions that as Christian we need to contemplate. American Christian have taken for granted our religious rights. We have Americanized our view of Christianity. This book should make us Christian question what is real in our relationship with Christ and what is just for show.
This is a short book, about an hour long. The narration makes it easy to listen to, making the hour pass quickly. I would recommend listening to the book more than once. I would recommend this book for all Christians.
